Daimler Trucks and Torc Robotics are testing automated trucks with SAE Level 4 intent technology on Virginia’s public roads. Currently, all automated runs must have a trained safety driver, who has a CDL, to be on board the truck, along with an engineer. Both are trained and certified by Daimler and Torc in vehicle dynamics and automated systems. Putting these trucks on public roads is done after they are extensively tested for safety validation on a closed loop track.
