According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, 5 additional Welcome Centers will be closed until the middle of May due to layoffs of the employees who take care of those facilities. The rest stops at the Menominee and Iron Mountain facilities have already been closed and will remain closed. The newest five Welcome Centers to close are Sault Ste. Marie, Monroe, Coldwater, New Buffalo, and Detroit. Most of the other state’s 63 rest areas remain open except for the seasonal few.
