How Traffic on New York’s Roads have Changed

With orders in place for people to stay at home, it’s a no-brainer that there will be less traffic out there on the roads. The New York State Thruway Authority has loads of data from constantly recording the tolls at exit plazas around the state. According to the numbers they have, in April 2019, just under 13 million trips were taken on the tolled portion of the Thruway, and in April 2020, the number dropped to just over 5 million. Cars and smaller vehicles accounted for over 11 million of those trips in 2019 and dropped to just over 4 million of the 2020 trips. This was a significant drop. In 2019, trucks and larger vehicles accounted for just over 1.5 million trips, which didn’t drop much in 2020 with 1.27 million trips.

According to this data, truck traffic only slowed a bit, while passenger vehicles plummeted due to COVID-19. Click the link below to learn more about this.
