FMCSA Expands and Extends Emergency Declaration, Again

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has stated that the Emergency Declaration is in need of extension and expansion. The original declaration was issued in the wake of the presidential national emergency related to the COVID-19. The new extension for carriers to offer direct emergency assistance runs through May 31, 2021, and is subject to certain restrictions and limitations.

The hours of service rules change for those providing direct assistance in emergency relief efforts pertaining to COVID-19. These are limited to the transportation of:

  • Livestock and livestock feed.
  • Medical supplies and equipment related to the COVID-19 relief effort.
  • The COVID -19 vaccine and the supplies necessary for distributing the vaccine.
  • Supplies and equipment to maintain community health.
  • Food, paper products, and groceries for emergency restocking.
