USDOT has Updated the Hours of Service Rules

The United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has updated the hours of service rules. With these new rules comes the hope of improved safety and increased flexibility that our country’s truckers have been looking for. With input from around the country and the public comment forum, the new rules have four revisions:

  • Drivers will be allowed, during adverse driving conditions, an extended driving window by up to two hours.
  • Modifications can be made to the split sleeper berth provisions allowing for more flexibility for the driver on how they want to split their sleep time.
  • The short-haul on-duty period went from 12 to 14 hours and the distance has been extended from 100 to 150 air miles.
  • 30-minute break time allows the driver flexibility by using on-duty, non-driving time instead of off-duty status.
